No KNF members named in 7 cases filed over Bandarban robberies, abduction

No members or leaders of the armed separatist group Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) were named in the seven cases that have been filed so far over the recent bank robberies and abduction in Bandarban. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said that KNF was involved in the incident, but about over 180 unnamed people were accused in four cases filed in Ruma and three in Thanchi. Talking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that a KNF was involved in the bank robberies and abduction. On April 5, police, Ansar, and Sonali Bank officials filed four cases with Ruma police station against 130-150 unnamed members of an armed group under various sections of the Special Powers Act 1974 and the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009. Krishi Bank officials and police also filed three cases against 25-30 unnamed members of a robber gang, said Thanchi police station Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim Uddin. He added that the filing of another case is underway. On Friday, armed men reportedly attacked a checkpost in Alikadam upazila of Bandarban. This follows incidents of robbery, abduction, and a clash between the KNF and law enforcement in Ruma and Thanchi upazilas over recent days. The separatist group had also kidnapped the Sonali Bank’s Ruma upazila branch manager on Tuesday, and tried to loot Tk1.5 crore from the vault of the Ruma branch. Unable to take the money, they kidnapped the bank manager, who was rescued later. They also carried out robberies at Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban on Wednesday.
