Dhaka University confers honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Bangabandhu

Dhaka University has conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a special convocation. During the ceremony on Sunday, the university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman presented the honorary degree to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangabandhu. The VC expressed the university’s gratitude to the Father of the Nation, emphasising the immeasurable debt owed to him. He said the special convocation was dedicated to Bangabandhu as a testament to his remarkable legacy. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of the Bengali liberation movement, was once a student of the university’s law department. During the Pakistan period, he was expelled for his active participation in the class IV employees’ movement. After 61 years, Dhaka University revoked the expulsion order in 2010. Akhtaruzzaman highlighted the remarkable blend of humility, intellectual curiosity, initiative, and character excellence in Bangabandhu’s legendary life and work. Stressing the need for comprehensive redevelopment of the institution’s research infrastructure, he also drew attention to the prime minister’s proposal to establish a ‘Research and Innovation Campus’ for Dhaka University in Purbachal.
