No extension of school closures, classes begin Sunday amid heatwave

Educational institutions will reopen on Sunday, despite the heatwave continuing to scorch Bangladesh. Classes and exams will resume on April 28 after a week-long break due to the intense heat. “The closures will not be extended because of the heat,” an official from the Ministry of Education said on Thursday. “Schools will open on Sunday.” Schools were closed from April 21 – April 27 amid the searing heat. On Wednesday, 52 districts across the country were experiencing a heatwave. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued several three-day warnings amid the baking heat. Meteorologists have warned that the ongoing heat wave will continue into the first week of May. The UN children’s agency UNICEF has also called for special precautionary measures, issuing a reminder that children are at ‘high risk’ due to the summer heat. An education ministry official said that students will not participate in any activities outside the classroom and assemblies would be barred until further notice.
