Heatwave warning issued for Dhaka, 3 other divisions

The Bangladesh Meteor-ological Department (BMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka and Barishal divisions for the next 72 hours from Wednesday. The warning comes as the ongoing mild to moderate heatwave over these areas is expected to intensify and spread. Discomfort levels are also likely to increase due to rising humidity, said the BMD. The classification system used by meteorologists defines a mild heatwave as having temperatures between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius, a moderate heatwave between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius and a severe heatwave as exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. In the past 24 hours, Ishurdi in Rajshahi division and Chuadanga in Khulna division recorded highs of 38.5 degrees Celsius, while Dhaka reached a maximum of 36 degrees Celsius. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies the elderly, children, pregnant women, athletes, and those engaged in outdoor physical activity as particularly vulnerable during heatwaves. People who work in direct sunlight are also at higher risk. During a heatwave, public health experts advise limiting outdoor activity between 11 am and 3 pm, when temperatures are at their peak. People are also recommended to seek shelter indoors or in shaded areas. Adequate hydration is advised for those observing Ramadan by consuming sufficient water and fluids like sherbet, green coconuts and fruit juice in Sehri and Iftar meals. People also need to bathe frequently and splash water on face and body regularly. Other recommendations are getting sufficient rest, wearing loose, breathable clothing and wearing sunglasses when outdoors.
