LPG prices go down in Bangladesh; relief for consumers

In a welcome development for consumers, the prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) have once again witnessed a downward trend in Bangladesh. The latest reduction comes as a breath of fresh air after a consistent uptick in prices over the past months. The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced a significant reduction in the price of LPG, specifically targeting the popular 12 kg cylinder. Effective immediately, consumers will notice a reduction of Tk 49, bringing the new price down to Tk 1,393 for the month of May. This latest adjustment marks a continuation of the trend observed in April, where the price of the 12 kg cylinder saw a decrease of Tk 40 compared to the preceding month. Prior to this, the prices had been on an upward trajectory, with increments recorded in February and March. Nurul Amin, the chairman of BERC, stressed the importance of these price adjustments in providing relief to consumers. He highlighted the reduction from Tk 1,442 to Tk 1,393 as indicative of the commission's efforts to mitigate the financial burden on households relying on LPG for their energy needs. Alongside the reduction in LPG prices, BERC also addressed the pricing of autogas. The consumer-level price for May has been fixed at Tk 63.92 per liter, inclusive of musk. This marks a decrease from the previous month, where the price stood at Tk 66.21 per liter. Reflecting on the trends from the previous year, it's evident that the pricing of both LPG and autogas has been subject to fluctuations. While 2023 saw a net increase in prices, there were instances of decline in January, March, April, June, and July. On the other hand, prices surged in February, May, and throughout the latter half of the year. These price adjustments carry significant implications for consumers across Bangladesh, impacting household budgets and transportation costs. The latest reductions offer a welcome respite, particularly against the backdrop of economic challenges faced by many amidst the ongoing global uncertainties.
