CUET students postpone movement, syndicate meeting Friday to review decision on closure

The protesting students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology on Thursday night postponed their movement over the death of their two fellows in a road accident. They also removed the blockade on Chattogram-Kaptai highway near their institution under Raujan upazila in Chattogeam district at about 11:45pm on Thursday night. Vehicular movement on the road resumed immediately after removal of the blocked. Earlier, the university authorities met 20 students who represented the protesters on Thursday night. After the meeting, the students announced that they were postponing the movement as their demands were under consideration and the bus driver was arrested. CUET associate professor and Deputy Director of Student Welfare, Md Saiful Islam, said that they would hold a syndicate meeting on Friday to review the directives of closing the university and asking students to leave halls. Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the CUET authorities announced the closure of the institution for an indefinite period reportedly to tackle the ongoing student protest over the death of their two fellows in a road crash. The university authorities also asked the male students to leave their hall by 5:00pm on Thursday and the female students to leave the hall by 9:00am on Friday. The students continued to stage demonstration into the night on Thursday by blocking the Chattogram-Kaptai highway near their institution in Raujan upazila in the district for the fourth consecutive day. They also burnt two buses of Shah Amanat Paribahan same day. On April 22, two civil engineering students of the CUET were killed in a road crash in Chattogram triggering their fellow students to launch the protest. Students placed a nine-point demand, including payment of appropriate compensation to the victim students’ families by the bus company, Shah Amanat Paribahan, cancellation of all the local bus services, establishment of a modern medical centre on the CUET campus, construction of four-lane highway from Chattogram to Kaptai, increasing the number of traffic islands and ensuring all road safety and speed control measures.
