The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday said that they had started an inquiry over allegations of amassing illegal wealth against former inspector general of Bangladesh Police, Benazir Ahmed. The commission in a meeting on April 18 decided to carry out the inquiry, said ACC secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen, while briefing journalists on Monday. A three-member inquiry team was also formed on Sunday for scrutinizing wealth of the former IGP. She said that the commission took the decision taking media reports into consideration. ACC formed the committee led by deputy director Hafizur Islam to conduct the inquiry. A Bengal newspaper has recently published a series of reports that alleged that the ex-IGP, his wife and daughters possessed a huge amount of illegal assets. The reports triggered huge criticism. The reports mentioned a lavish lifestyle of Benazir Ahmed, who also served as the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion from January 2015 to April 2020 before he was promoted to the post of IGP on April 15, 2020. The reports mentions that the ex-IGP dependants hold shares in different companies. Benazir, however, on Saturday denied the allegations and claimed that the reports were false and fabricated.
