RSF report finds increase in numbers of deaths, road accidents during eid

Another organisation’s report, published on Wednesday, revealed that the number of road accidents and deaths in these accidents increased during the last Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. At least 367 people were killed and over 1,500 others injured in 358 road accidents in 15 days, from April 4 and till April 18, said a report of the Road Safety Foundation. Compared with the journeys during Eid-ul-Fitr in 2023, this year the number of road accidents has increased by 39.2per cent and the number of deaths has increased by 20.1per cent. Last year during the eid holidays, daily on an average 20.35 people were killed in road accidents, while this year, during eid holidays, daily on an average 24.46 people were killed. RSF report also showed that in 183 or 51.11 per cent motorcycle related crashes, 156 or 42.5 per cent people were killed this year. Earlier a Bangladesh Road Transport Authority report revealed on April 21 that 295 people were killed and 405 others were injured in 254 road accidents in 15 days between April 4 and April 18 during the eid holiday. In 2023, during the same Eid holidays, 239 were killed and 510 more injured in 253 road crashes in 15 days, the BRTA report added. At least 407 people were killed and 1,398 others injured in 399 road crashes in 15 days during the last Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, said a report of the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh on April 20. Compared with the journeys during Eid-ul-Fitr in 2023, the numbers of road accidents in the country increased by 31.25 per cent, deaths by 24.08 per cent and injured people by 147.43 per cent in this year, the PWAB report added.
