CUET backtracks from indefinite closure

The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has withdrawn its decision to suspend academic activities for an indefinite period following student protests. Classes and examinations will remain suspended until May 9 but students may stay in the residential halls, the university decided in its syndicate meeting on Friday (April 26). Earlier on Thursday (April 25), CUET was closed indefinitely following protests by its students sparked by the deaths of two of its students. The university authorities asked the male students to vacate their dormitory by 5pm and the female students by 9am on Friday. Later, the agitating students set a bus on fire in the evening. Following the incident, a meeting was held between the university’s administration and the agitating students at 11:30pm on that day. At that time, the administration assured the students that they would take the final decision at the syndicate meeting. Shanto Saha and Toufiq Hossain were killed after a bus hit their motorcycle head-on at the Syeda Selima Quader Chowdhury College Gate area on Monday (April 22). One of them was heard requesting people take them to hospital but everyone was busy taking photos and videos of the accident site. Demands raised by the agitating students included exemplary punishment for Shah Amanat transport authority, adequate compensation for the victims’ families and widening the Chattogram-Kaptai road. The students also announced they would stay away from all academic activities if their demands were not met.
