Classes during heatwaves: Govt issues new directives

The government has issued a set of directives for academic activities as schools, colleges and madrasas reopen tomorrow (April 28) after a week’s closure because of record heatwaves sweeping across Bangladesh. Classes will resume at primary schools run by the government and Child Welfare Trust and learning centres of the Bureau of Non-Formal Education, the primary and mass education ministry announced Saturday (April 27). Government-run schools will resume classes tomorrow. Schools that have single shifts will operate from 8am to 11:30am but for those with two shifts, the first one will be held from 9am to 9:30am and the second one from 9:45am to 11:30am. Meanwhile, the regular assembly sessions will remain suspended until the temperature becomes tolerable. Upazila education officers will issue weekly routines for upazila-based class activities considering the routine suggested by the directorate. Apart from this, pre-primary classes will remain closed until further notice. The officials concerned have been instructed to take necessary measures in this regard. On April 20, the Education Ministry decided that all primary and secondary schools and colleges across the country would remain closed from April 21 to 27 due to the heatwave. Heatwave continues ------------------ Meanwhile, a very severe heatwave is sweeping over the districts of Rajshahi, Chuadanga and Pabna, while a severe heat wave has gripped the districts of Tangail, Bogura, Bagerhat, Jashore and Kushtia. A mild to moderate heatwave is affecting the rest of Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the divisions of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Barishal and the districts of Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni and Bandarban, the Met Office said in a regular forecast on Saturday (April 27). The weather condition is likely to remain unchanged, it said. Friday’s maximum temperature in Dhaka was 38.2C, while today’s minimum temperature was 28.8C, the BMD said. Meanwhile, Chuadanga recorded the maximum temperature yesterday (April 26) at 42.7C.
