DAE issues urgent instructions to farmers

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has issued special instructions for farmers in the wake of a Met Office forecast of heavy rainfall in northeastern Bangladesh. According to the forecast, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Haor area of the northeastern regions, comprising Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, and Netrakona, starting May 3. In this situation, the DAE issued special instructions to protect crops in these areas. The guidelines suggest harvesting boro paddy quickly if it is 80% ripe and store it in a safe and dry place. Besides, it also asked to arrange poles for fast-maturing vegetables, bananas, and other horticultural crops. Apart from this, the farmers have been advised to clean the drains of the agricultural land, not to allow water to accumulate in the paddy fields, to raise the aisles of the land, and to remove excess water from the crop fields. Avoiding irrigation, fertilisers, and pesticides during rains and applying pesticides after rains have also been advised.
