'Heatstroke' kills 2 men in Madaripur

Extreme heat has apparently claimed two more lives in Madaripur as the Met Office extends its countrywide heat alert by three more days. The fatalities were reported on Tuesday (April 23), said Madaripur district police chief Masud Alam. Businessman Shahadat Sardar, 52, son of Salam Sardar of Kalkini’s West Shikarmongol village, died in the morning. Locals and relatives said Shahadat fell ill due to the extreme heat. After a while, he felt pain in his chest and died. Moslem Ghorami, 58, son of Islam Ghorami of Dashar Uapzila’s East Maijpara village, died at noon. The farmer went to work in the jute field next to his house. He died while working under the blazing sun. Later in the afternoon, the family members recovered his body. Madaripur Civil Surgeon Munir Ahmed Khan has advised everyone to stay in the shade and drink plenty of water amid the ongoing heatwave. A number of heat-related fatalities have been reported from across Bangladesh in recent days as an extreme weather grips the country. The mercury rose to 42C in some places and the Met Office says the situation won't improve soon. April is typically the hottest time of the year in Southeast Asia, but conditions this year have been exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern. Last year saw record levels of heat stress across the globe, with the United Nations weather and climate agency saying Asia was warming at a particularly rapid pace. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has extended the ongoing heat alert for three more days.
