Schools, colleges reopen amid heatwave

Primary schools, high schools and colleges as well as madrasas across the country have reopened even as a blistering heatwave sweeps over Bangladesh. Students returned to classes on Sunday morning (April 28), much to the dismay of the guardians who are worried that the extreme weather will take its toll on their children. They were not in favour of reopening educational institutions at this point and demanded extending the vacation for a few more days until the weather became a little cooler. Earlier, the government issued a set of directives for academic activities before the reopening. According to the directives, schools that have single shifts will operate from 8am to 11:30am but for those with two shifts, the first one will be held from 9am to 9:30am and the second one from 9:45am to 11:30am. However, daily assemblies will remain suspended across the country until the heatwave becomes bearable. Meanwhile, pre-primary classes will remain closed until further notice. The officials concerned have been instructed to take necessary measures in this regard. On the other hand, the primary and mass education ministry said primary schools would not have any academic activities on Saturdays.
